Name Change

There are different types and reasons for a name change. An adult can petition the Court to officially grant a change of name by filing the appropriate forms and following the necessary procedures. If approved, the Court will issue an order recognizing the new name. A spouse in a divorce can request a name change (to restore her former name) if she did not change her name as part of the divorce proceeding.

The petition to change the name of a minor involves different reasons and requirements. If a minor is being adopted, the minor’s name generally can be changed through the adoption proceeding without having to file a separate Court action.

The Court can refuse to grant a name change if a substantial reason exists for the denial.
